Summer Newsletter 2021
Summer is full of fun and sun at the Red River Valley Museum!
June was full of festivities! We opened the 20th Annual International Juried Art Show and held a celebration of donors who made our most recent redesign possible.
The first ever annual Kid's Day at the Museum was a hit as well! On June 12th we offered free admission to all exhibits, had art activities available, and ended the day by giving out awards for the first annual Youth Art Show! Over 100 people visited us from the greater Texoma area. We can't wait for next years event!
MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR SEPTEMBER 9TH!
TEXOMA GIVES 2021
Help us raise $40,000 to continue keeping history alive! Upcoming BIG projects include Waggoner Gallery Redesign, covered patio and play area, and study area! Help these dreams come to life and make Vernon an even greater destination!
🎨YOUTH ART CAMPS 🎨
July 27th to August 6th was a lively time to visit the museum! 28 children attended this years Art Camp!
Projects were inspired by local history, science, and of course, traditional art techniques!
Thanks to a generous grant we will now be able to offer FREE tours to school groups!
If you know of a teacher or school who would enjoy a fun and educational experience during the 2021-22 school year, send them our way! We will be reaching out to area schools soon to get as many students through the museum doors as possible.
Upcoming Exhibitions:
The Wright Gallery will be put to great use this fall! September 7th to October 23rd we will be hosting "Bones of Texas," a photography exhibition by two Texan artists, Morgan Page and Dustin Rice, who document the ghost towns of Texas and their stories.
October 26th to November 20th we will be hosting an original exhibition in conjunction with the North Texas State Hospital Art Therapy Program. Art is a wonderful medium to use when addressing hot topics such as mental health. We hope to work towards destigmatizing those conversations by displaying art created by patients working towards rehabilitation.
Board Spotlight: Dr. Marvin Sharp
Dr. Marvin Sharp has served on the Red River Valley Museum board long before it found a home on the Vernon College campus. As one of the longest serving board members we would like to recognize his commitment to the museum and his community.
Dr. Sharp was an all-star full back for the Vernon Lions. His performance on the field earned him a scholarship to Southern Methodist University where he earned a degree in business. Upon graduation he joined the Navy where he served his country for several years. He then attended Texas A&M University, where he received a DVM degree as well as an MS degree in parasitology before returning home to Vernon where he would open his own practice.
Quickly after coming home, Dr. Sharp joined the museum board and was instrumental in fundraising the building that now houses the RRVM. His hard work and dedication did not end there. He served as board president and continually helped the museum improve over the years.
He is an active member in his church and supports many organizations around Vernon. He and his wife, Patsy, are wonderful assets to the board and to the community. Thank you for all you do!
