RRRVM Honored with the John L. Nau, III Award of Excellence in Museums

We are thrilled to share some exciting news—The Texas Historical Commission (THC) has recognized the Red River Valley Museum as the 2024 recipient of the John L. Nau, III Award of Excellence in Museums!

This prestigious award highlights the vital role history museums play in connecting communities, preserving heritage, and contributing to local economies. As one of just 10 annual THC Preservation Awards, this recognition reaffirms our commitment to engaging, educating, and inspiring visitors through our exhibits and programs.

A Museum with a Mission

Since our founding in the 1960s, the Red River Valley Museum has been dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history, art, and culture of Texoma. Through immersive experiences, hands-on learning, and strong partnerships with local schools, we strive to make history accessible and engaging for all ages.

Our guided tours, led by passionate volunteers and staff, bring our exhibits to life—whether it’s learning about prehistoric fossils, legendary ranching traditions, or the artistic and cultural heritage of our region. We believe that museums are more than just collections of artifacts; they are living, breathing spaces where stories come to life.

Innovation & Community Engagement

One of our recent projects demonstrates this philosophy in action. We had the opportunity to collaborate with a the Vernon Boys & Girls Club robotics team to create a more engaging and effective guidebook for young visitors. This project not only enhanced the museum experience but also highlighted the intersection of history, technology, and community-driven innovation.

This award is a reflection of our dedicated volunteers, staff, and supporters who continue to help us grow. From educators to local history buffs, from schoolchildren to lifelong learners, we are grateful for the continued enthusiasm that makes our work possible.

Looking Ahead

We are honored to receive this award, but we see it as just the beginning! As we continue to expand our exhibits, develop new educational programs, and bring history to life in fresh and exciting ways, we invite you to be a part of this journey.

The award will be presented at the THC’s Real Places 2025 conference, taking place April 23–25 in Austin and online. This event, hosted by the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission, is Texas’ premier historic preservation and heritage tourism gathering.

Thank you for being part of our story—we can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Stay connected with us for updates on upcoming exhibits, programs, and special events. Your support keeps history alive!
